The Legacy of Prince Abdulrahman Ibrahima Ibn Sori

Prince Abdulrahman Ibrahima Sori was a royal figure from Timbuktu, present-day Mali, and Timbo, Guinea. Enslaved in Natchez, Mississippi, from 1788 to 1828, his liberation came through the concerted efforts of President John Quincy Adams and the Sultan of Morocco. Prince Abdulrahman was married to Isabella Foster, and together they had nine children, who remained in Natchez after their emancipation.

Tragically, Prince Abdulrahman passed away in Monrovia, Liberia, in 1829, soon after gaining his freedom. Following his death, two of his children, along with their families, were emancipated to care for their aging mother.  Today, the descendants of Prince Abdulrahman and Isabella can be found in Natchez, Mississippi, USA; Monrovia, Liberia; Timbo, Guinea; and Timbuktu, Mali. The legacy of Prince Abdulrahman Ibrahima Sori has been remarkably preserved by Her Royal Highness, Princess Karen Chatman, who was born in Natchez, Mississippi. She established The Official Royal House of Sori in 1993, dedicated to honoring the rich heritage and history of their ancestral lineage.
