The Root Nine Foundation and Institute is governed by a five member voting Board of Directors, supported by a non voting Advisory Board and administrative staff. This structure ensures that mission, strategy, finances, and major partnerships are overseen collectively rather than by any single individual.

In accordance with R9 governance policy, the identities of individual Board and Advisory Board members are treated as nonpublic organizational information and are not routinely disclosed. This practice protects the privacy of those serving R9 mission. Disclosure may be made for legitimate purposes, including grant review, contractual due diligence, or regulatory requirements, upon written request stating the reason for the inquiry, subject to R9 internal review.
