200 Years Since Emancipation: 1828–2028
The Official Royal House of Sori® proudly unveils the 2028 Bicentennial Commemorative Coin honoring Prince Abdulrahman Ibrahima Ibn Sori—marking 200 years since his emancipation in 1828.
The Story
Born a prince in Timbuktu, Guinea (1762), enslaved in Natchez, Mississippi for 40 years, Prince Abdulrahman gained freedom through international diplomacy in 1828. He departed Norfolk, Virginia aboard the ship Harriet bound for Monrovia, Liberia, hoping to return home to Guinea. He died in Monrovia in 1829, never completing his journey.
